WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. officials have released new proposed public school boundaries after previous proposals that would replace neighborhood schools drew widespread resistance.
Under the newest proposal released Thursday, D.C. would maintain neighborhood schools. But it would significantly redraw some boundaries to account for school closures and demographic changes.
Officials are trying to keep families from fleeing to charter schools or the suburbs as their children reach middle school. Under the plan, K-8 schools would become elementary schools, and there would be three new neighborhood middle schools.
Attendance boundaries for middle and high schools would change most dramatically. The proposal would significantly shrink the attendance zones for Alice Deal Middle School and Wilson High School, two of the most sought-after schools.
Some schools recently closed could be reopened, citing growing population and walkability.
