Weather service confirms May tornado in Loudoun County

WASHINGTON — The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that a tornado touched down in Loudoun County last month.

After a review of radar observations, spotter reports and a ground survey, the National Weather Service says a tornado struck three miles east of Middleburg at 3:30 a.m. May 16.

The weather service classified the tornado as an EF-0, which means it had winds of about 65 mph and it lasted about a minute. The path of the storm was about 75 yards wide.

The tornado uprooted several trees, most notably a large tree that fell across Sally Mill Road near Light Horse Court, the weather service says.
