Tuesday - 6/10/2014, 4:34am  ET

WASHINGTON -- A D.C. police officer shot at a dog Monday afternoon in Northeast, but the dog escaped.

D.C. police say it happened at about 5:30 p.m. at 61st and Clay streets, a few blocks away from the Capitol Heights Metro station.

Police say they aren't sure whether the dog was struck, and a spokesman could not say why the officer fired at the dog.

The spokesman says the dog was last seen running away from the scene and that animal control has been notified.
