Capital Pride Street Festival Sunday

WASHINGTON — The Capital Pride Festival is expected to draw some 200,000 people to downtown D.C. today, according to organizers of the popular annual gay pride event.

The weekend festivities, which included a parade on Saturday, is promoted by Capital Pride, an organization dedicated to promoting the strength and advocacy of the Capital region’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community (GLBT).

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington is just one of the acts performing today on the three stages set up for the street festival, which will take place from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue SE, between 3rd and 7th Streets.

There will also be two beverage gardens, a food court, and a family and educational activity area. A Capital Sunset Dance will go from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the main stage.

Parking is limited in the area and organizers recommending using Metro.

At day’s end there’ll be a capitol sunset closing party at the Capital Main Stage.

According to D.C. officials, the following areas will be closed from 7:30 p.m. Saturday until 2:00 a.m. Monday due to the festival:

  • Pennsylvania Ave NW between 3rd & 7th Street NW
  • Constitution Ave NW between 3rd & 7th Street NW
  • 4th Street NW between Madison Drive NW & Pennsylvania Ave NW
