Number of homeless in Va. down nearly 8 pct

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — State officials say the number of homeless Virginians decreased by nearly 8 percent in the last year to 7,020 people.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office says the decrease follows several years of focused work on tackling homelessness in Virginia.

The numbers are based on data collected in a 24-hour snapshot of homelessness and compiled by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1oziXUX ) that the state saw a nearly 11 percent drop in family homelessness to 877 families.

Virginia also saw veteran homelessness fall 14 percent to 617 veterans.
