Maine ice cream company to expand to Washington

SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) — Company executives with Skowhegan-based Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream say the firm is preparing a push into the Washington, D.C., market.

The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1vSiuT8 ) reports the company will unveil a marketing campaign in the Washington area this summer. Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream acquired a competitor with a similar name in the national’s capital about two years ago.

Company general manager Lindsay Skilling told the paper that the company’s sales have grown 7 to 10 percent in each of the last several years. Its products are available in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Michigan, among other others. The company began with an ice cream stand in Skowhegan in 1980.
