Washington National Cathedral celebrates chamber bell

WASHINGTON — From blocks away, you can hear them ringing; their sound is carried along the breeze.

On the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral, the sound draws your eyes to the soaring central tower that houses the 10-bell peal set.

It’s the 50th anniversary of the cathedral’s chamber bell, and the ringing continues through Monday evening.

“It’s almost like a kind of meditation, a lot of concentration,” says Don Morrison, who has rung bells in towers throughout North America and England.

Bell ringing, he says, is an obsessive hobby at the cusp of music, sport and mathematics.
