Annual camp helps kids who’ve lost loved ones in military

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — They’re gathering this morning at a hotel not far from the Pentagon — hundreds of kids, from toddlers to teens, who have lost a loved one in the military.

They’re attending the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors’ annual Good Grief Camp for a weekend of bonding, playing and grieving.

Army Staff Sergeant Rob Stearns (sturnz) is among the active-duty service members volunteering as peer mentors. Stearns says he knows what the kids are going through. His father committed suicide and his brother was killed in Iraq.

Stearns says the weekend is about helping the survivors have fun in a place where they don’t feel like outsiders.
