Jazz in the Garden kicks off 14th season

WASHINGTON — Not all the fun this weekend is at the beach.

The Jazz in the Garden Series begins its 14th season on Friday, just across the street from the National Archives in the District. The weekly performances feature jazz, blues, Latin, salsa and funk artists.

“We really encourage you to get there early if you want to have a seat or lay out a blanket for your friends,” says Program Coordinator Bruno Nasta.

The popular series has drawn up to 17,000 people to the Sculpture Garden. Available spots to sit go quickly.

New art and a new menu are ready for the summer’s concerts. Like previous years, beer and homemade sangria will be for sale.

No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed, but visitors can pack their own picnics, including non-alcoholic drinks. Backpacks and coolers must stay outside the Sculpture Garden.

The Afro funk group Elikeh returns for a second time to open the series.

“High, high energy and lots of dancing” is how Nasta describes their performances.

The free programs run from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. each Friday through August, with the exception of July 4.

The Sculpture Garden is located on the National Mall at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.

The nearest Metro stations are Archives/Navy Memorial (Green/Yellow Lines), Smithsonian (Blue/Orange Lines), and Judiciary Square (Red Line).
