RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Attorney General Mark Herring disagree over the need for the state to cover the legal fees of staffers to former Gov. Bob McDonnell.
McAuliffe’s office began negotiating to rehire an outside law firm that had represented several McDonnell staffers in February, according to McAuliffe’s spokesman Brian Coy. The move came after Herring had terminated the contract for the outside firm in January as one of his first acts in office.
Coy said the governor thought the staffers who were subpoenaed by McDonnell’s lawyers to testify at his upcoming corruption trial shouldn’t be burdened with large legal fees.
Herring spokesman Michael Kelly said the attorney general stands by his January decision to terminate the contract, saying it was done to help save taxpayer money.
