Suspect being evaluated after Roanoke shooting

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Police say a man accused of firing a shot from the roof of a Roanoke motel is undergoing an evaluation at a local hospital.

Roanoke police spokesman Scott Leamon says 42-year-old Sean Michael Lovelace of Roanoke was unarmed when he was taken into custody.

Leamon says police responded to the Starlite Motel shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday following a report of a suicidal individual on the motel’s roof who was armed.

Traffic in the area was stopped.

Leamon says the suspect fired one shot toward several officers. He then jumped off the rear of the roof but couldn’t escape a containment area set up by police.

Police found two guns on the roof. Leamon didn’t say what type of firearms were found.

There were no injuries.
