Henrico board resumes opening meetings with prayer

HENRICO, Va. (AP) — The Henrico County Board of Supervisors has resumed opening meetings with prayer in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision.

The board had switched from invocations to a moment of silence in 2012.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1sNsWZx ) reports that the board opened Tuesday’s regular meeting with former deputy county manager George T. Drumwright Jr. reading a prayer given by President George H.W. Bush on his inauguration in 1989.

Board chairwoman Patricia S. O’Bannon said the opening invocation has been a tradition.

The Supreme Court ruled last week in a New York case that a town didn’t violate the Constitution by allowing ministers to deliver Christian prayers at meetings, since it had an inclusive invitation policy.
