WAYNESBORO, Va. (AP) — New bids will be sought for the first phase of a railroad tunnel restoration project in Nelson and Augusta counties.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded $749,149 for restoration of the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel. Nelson County supervisor Alan Hale says the original bids for the work exceeded the funding.
Hale says the project will be rebid later this month.
The tunnel was built in the 1850s. Rail cars stopped using the tunnel in 1944 when a new tunnel was opened.
The first phase of the restoration includes constructing a new trailhead on the tunnel’s east side, along with parking.
Media outlets report that Hale gave an update on the project to the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Metropolitan Planning Organization last week.
