Council member seeks condition on Pepco deal

WASHINGTON — With Pepco in the midst of being sold for nearly $7 billion, one Montgomery County Council member sees the potential deal as an opportunity.

Council member Roger Berliner says that “to the Pepco customer like myself who has suffered all these years from poor service, this sale has the potential to create a better system for our residents.”

Toward that end, Berliner is proposing a resolution that would call on Maryland’s Public Service Commission to impose a condition on the sale of Pepco to the Chicago-based Exelon Corp.

Berliner wants the commission to insist that Exelon “commit to improving the system dramatically, fast.”

State and federal regulators must approve of the sale, as must Pepco shareholders.
