RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The group that is bringing the cycling world championships to Virginia in September 2015 declared its hosting of the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships as a trial run a huge success.
The three-day college competition concluded Sunday with four road races on essentially the same course the professionals will be tested by in 16½ months, and riders gave the course high marks.
About 400 male and female riders from 115 schools also raced on the same layout that will be used for time trials in 2015 on Friday, and did 50-minute criteriums that will not be a part of worlds on Saturday. They say the courses were challenging and difficult.
Richmond will be the first U.S. location to host the world championships since 1986.
