Capital Crescent Trail to be partially closed due to sewage spill

WASHINGTON — Part of the Capital Crescent Trail is closed due to a sewer line break, and DC Water estimates that the repairs could take a week or more.

The trail is closed between Fletchers Cove and the end of the trail at Water Street, in Georgetown. The tunnel below Canal Road near Foxhall is also closed, DC Water says.

The break happened late in the day Wednesday, according to a statement from DC Water, and caused about 5 million gallons of sewage to overflow into the Potomac River, flowing over the trail as it went.

DC Water says that people should avoid contact with the Potomac River for 72 hours, “just as is the case after any heavy rains.”
