PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Cranston police have shot and wounded a fugitive from Virginia.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1fhZdFJ ) that police say Shawn A. Sykes was carrying a gun and drugs when police tried to approach him at a traffic stop on Saturday.

Providence police say he's wanted by authorities in Richmond, Va., for commercial sex offenses. He also was out on bail for drug charges from Providence.

Cranston police say Sykes was driving erratically and wouldn't stop. Police say he got out of his vehicle and pointed a gun at two Cranston officers. One fired back, hitting him in the arm.

Sykes was treated and released to the custody of Providence police. He's being held on charges of felony assault, drug and gun charges.

It was not known Sunday if he's represented by a lawyer.
