BEDFORD, Va. (AP) -- The National Park Service has declined to take over management of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford.

The park service says in a report that the memorial isn't a good fit. The report lists several reasons, including 22 existing park system units related to the theme of World War II.

The report also says the site's owner, the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, doesn't currently support the park service taking over the memorial.

The News & Advance ( ) says the park service initiated the study in 2009 after former foundation president William McIntosh saide the memorial could close because of a lack of money.

Since then, the foundation's finances have improved. The chairman of the foundation's board, Barry N. Moore, says the nonprofit is now financially solvent.
