Police standoff in Tysons Corner ends

TYSONS CORNER, Va. — A police standoff in Tysons Corner lasted nearly 8 hours but ended with no injuries and the suspect in custody.

The standoff at a 10-story condominium building in a gated community in the heart of Tysons Corner started after police responded to a call at 1:55 a.m. It ended just after 9:30 a.m.

When police responded to the loud music call at a unit at The Rotonda in the 8300 block of Greensboro Drive, the man inside said he would shoot police if they entered the condo.

The threat prompted police to begin negotiations, with the negotiators outside his door.

“The officers that were doing the negotiations were forced to make entry because they thought they did smell something that could possibly have been smoke, but at this point there was not active fire in the apartment,” said Fairfax County police spokesman Bud Walker.

Police searched the apartment and said they found two dogs. They declined to discuss anything else found during the search.

Walker says if the police investigation determines there was a health issue involved, the man’s identity will not be released. If the man is charged, police will release his identity.

Walker says police don’t know whether the man was in his own apartment or someone else’s. The man did not have any hostages, Walker said.

Police evacuated three floors of the Rotonda when they smelled “something suspicious that could possibly have been gasoline,” Walker said.

The residents were taken to a community center but have been allowed to return to their units.

Greensboro Drive, which had been closed between Westpark and International drives, has reopened.
