Proposals on DC school boundaries prompt debate

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mayor Vincent Gray's proposals to overhaul D.C. public school boundaries are spurring debate over whether the city is ready to give up neighborhood-based schools.

The Washington Post ( ) reports the suggestion of an overhaul of the current model in favor of school choice and expanded lottery admissions has triggered protests.

Parents in affluent northwest Washington are especially opposed to losing the right to attend good nearby schools because they bought homes based on that expectation.

Many parents say they share the ideal of a neighborhood school. But they say that's not realistic in many parts of the city with low-performing schools.

School districts nationwide have grappled with how to assign students since the early days of desegregation. San Francisco, Baltimore and New Orleans have pursued citywide school choice policies.
