ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- The Arlington County Board's newest member is set to be sworn in.
The swearing-in ceremony for John Vihstadt (VYE'-stat) is scheduled for Friday afternoon at the county board offices. The independent will be the first non-Democrat to serve on the board since 1999.
Vihstadt defeated Democrat Alan Howze with 57 percent of the vote in Tuesday's special election to replace Chris Zimmerman, who stepped down earlier this year. The 61-year-old will serve through the end of the year. He says he plans to run for a four-year term in November.
