UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Weather-weary golfers are teeing up now that spring has set in.
At Lake Presidential Golf Club, Troy Miller, general manager, says business is finally picking up.
“It’s been by far the roughest winter that I have ever experienced,” he says.
Miller says normally in the D.C. area, you can golf year round.
“The last five months…it’s been uncomfortable to be outside,” he says.
During the winter, the club was forced to close their doors on several occasions. “When you’ve got snow on a Monday and then you have a 50 degree day, people want to know why you aren’t open,” he says. And many of the days they could open, golfers were forced to stay on the cart tracks to protect the soggy greens.
Now that the temperatures are up, “A lot of people have a lot of pent up demand to come out and play golf,” he says.
They expect to serve out 200 rounds of golf a day, with the weekends being their peak times. Plus, he says the driving range will also be a popular destination.
“You get an additional 50 people out every day just coming out to hit balls and just take it in an be outside,” he says.
Pete Van Zandt, of Severna Park, says he’s glad to be back out working on his swing.
“I’m looking forward to seeing some nice weather, getting out and hitting a few good golf shots.”
Another golfer, who was playing hooky from work, says, “It’s been an incredibly long winter and the stroke obviously shows that.”
He says the hardest part about getting back on the links is that you are “stiff, you can move, you can’t remember your stroke or anything like that.”
