Where do Nationals fans live? Facebook maps MLB support

WASHINGTON — If you root for the Washington Nationals, you live in Virginia, Maryland or D.C. — and nowhere else.

At least that’s according to a map released by Facebook of where each team’s fan base is located, which is posted on The Washington Post.

Last week, the social network released a Major League Baseball “Fandom Map” determined by each team’s Facebook likes per county.

While it’s not the most scientific data, Facebook found that the Nationals’ fans are predominately in 18 counties, D.C. and some other small cities. Also, the Nats have one of Major League Baseball’s smallest fan bases when it comes to geographic size.

The fan base includes:

  • D.C.
  • In Maryland: Montgomery, Prince George’s and Charles counties
  • In Virginia: Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Rappahannock, Madison, Culpeper, Orange, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Westmoreland, Fauquier, Prince William, Fairfax and Arlington counties as well as Manassas, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax city.

The map show Nats fans surrounded by Baltimore Orioles fans to the north, New York Yankees fans to the south and Pittsburgh Pirates fans to the west. Even Virginia’s Loudoun County shows loyalty to the Yankees.

The Orioles dominate most of Maryland, but Facebook says the team’s fan base can be found predominately in the following areas:

  • All of Maryland except Montgomery, Prince George’s and Charles counties (Nats) and Garrett County (Pirates).
  • Shenandoah and Accomack counties in Virginia, plus the city of Winchester.
  • York, Adams and Franklin counties in Pennsylvania.
  • Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan and Hampshire counties in West Virginia.

While the Nats’ may not have a huge showing on the map, neither the New York Mets nor the Oakland Athletics accrued any support from counties on the map.
