WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Animal Rescue League is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The Washington Post ( ) reports the shelter is celebrating its anniversary Monday. The shelter's chief executive, Bob Ramin, tells the paper the shelter was originally founded in 1914 to house and rehabilitate mistreated workhorses. The privately-funded shelter later changed its focus to dogs and cats.

Ramin says the league hopes to expand its medical center and quarantine area for dogs with a building it bought next door to its current building in northwest Washington. Fundraising to pay for renovations will begin this year. The league hopes to open the building in 2016.
