WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) -- A state appellate court has upheld the conviction and lengthy prison sentence for a southern New Jersey man who was convicted of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter over a two-year period.

In their 61-page decision issued Wednesday, the court said it was an "understatement" to say the state's evidence against Michael Pavlyik (PAHV'-lick) adequately supported the verdict reached in 2011 by a Gloucester County jury. The 43-year-old Greenwich Township man is now serving a 33-year state prison sentence.

Pavlyik was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault and child endangerment. Prosecutors have said the crimes occurred while the stepdaughter, who lived with her father in Maryland, was visiting her mother in Greenwich Township.

The assaults began when the girl was 8 years old. Pavlyik was arrested in March 2007.
