Mount St. Mary's president postpones departure

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Mount St. Mary's University says President Thomas Powell is staying on for two more years because the school hasn't been able to find a successor.

The Roman Catholic school in Emmitsburg said Friday that Powell will remain in office until July 2016 instead of stepping down this June, as planned.

Board of Trustees Chairman John Coyne says the extended search for a new president reflects a commitment to selectivity.

Powell said in May he would leave the president's office in June 2014 for a yearlong sabbatical that would include working with his wife Irene at an orphanage in East Timor. He had planned to return to the campus to teach after that.

Powell was appointed president in 2003. He has overseen changes aimed at improving the school's academic reputation.
