HAMPTON, Va. -- The family of a man who died in the custody of Hampton police has settled their lawsuit against the city.

WAVY-TV ( ) reports that the city agreed to pay $500,000 to the family of Hatchel P. Adams III.

Hampton police have said officers shot the 36-year-old Adams twice with a stun gun in 2009 after he repeatedly swung a samurai-style sword at them. Adams stopped breathing and the officers began CPR and called medics.

Reviews conducted by the Hampton Police Division Office of Professional Standards and the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney each concluded that the officers followed proper procedure.

The family's attorney, Verbena Askew, tells WAVY that Adams was defending himself. She says he didn't threaten the officers with a sword.
