VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Virginia's transportation secretary is putting the brakes on a new toll road that will run parallel to U.S. 460 from Suffolk to Petersburg.
Secretary Aubrey Layne announced the decision Friday during a stop in Virginia Beach. He said the suspension is needed so the Virginia Department of Transportation can continue to secure environmental approvals.
Layne called his decision to cut spending while those reviews are underway a "prudent and practical" move. He said the state remains committed to moving forward with the project.
The $1.4 billion contract for the 55-mile highway was awarded in 2012 to US 460 Mobility Partners.
The environmental reviews are being done at the request of the Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Highway Administration.
