Hotels.com: Washington eighth-most popular spot for visitors

Hotels.com’s annual rankings of vacation destinations has Washington as the eighth-most popular spot for American travelers in 2013, even as hotel room rates slipped a bit.

The average room rate in Washington, D.C. last year was $156 a night, down from $157 in 2012.

The top domestic destination for domestic travelers in 2013 remained the cheapest. Las Vegas held on to its top spot even as room rates were up 8 percent last year. the average nightly rate in Vegas was just $90.

New York ranked No. 2 for domestic travelers, unchanged from last year, with an average room rate of $267 a night, up 1 percent from 2012. Orlando, Los Angeles and San Diego round out the top five favorites for domestic travel.

Washington, unchanged from its 2012 ranking, also moved into the top 10 for American destinations favored among international travelers, ranking No. 10, up from No. 11 in 2012.
