McLEAN, Va. (AP) -- Light traffic volume kept drivers off the roads, and authorities reported mostly minor crashes on the highways during the height of the winter storm.
Spokeswoman Corinne Geller said that Virginia State Police responded to 65 traffic crashes in northern Virginia -- most of them minor -- through 10:30 a.m. Monday.
The number was far fewer than the 151 crashes reported in the Richmond area during that same time frame.
Geller says crash numbers always drop in northern Virginia on days that the federal government and local governments close their offices, as occurred Monday.
On the other side of the Potomac, the Maryland State Highway Administration said most people are staying off the roads, and only minor accidents have been reported.
