Bedford not giving up on getting rail stop

BEDFORD, Va. (AP) -- Bedford county and town officials aren't giving up on their quest to get a stop on a future rail line linking Lynchburg and Roanoke.

Virginia Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne notified the Bedford County administrator in a recent let that the stop won't be added to the line.

The News & Advance ( ) reports that Layne's letter cited the town of Bedford's population of around 6,222. Roanoke's population is 96,922 and Lynchburg's is 75,568.

Town Manager Charlie Kolakowski says the decision is unfortunate. But he says future stops sometimes are added as a rail line gets up and running.

Layne's letter also says a rail station in Bedford is more likely to shift ridership from Lynchburg's station than to increase total new riders on the route.
