DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) -- A Chesterfield County man has been declared mentally incompetent to stand trial for the shooting death of a Virginia state trooper.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1dJxua4 ) reports that a Dinwiddie County judge ordered Russell E. Brown II sent to a state mental hospital for treatment in an effort to restore his competency for trial.
The 28-year-old Brown faces eight felony counts, including capital murder, in the March 7 slaying of Trooper Junius A. Walker. The 63-year-old officer was fatally shot in his police cruiser on Interstate 85 after stopping to see if Brown needed help. Brown told police God told him to shoot Walker.
Dinwiddie County Commonwealth's Attorney Lisa Caruso said in court Friday that a psychologist determined through a mental evaluation that Brown was incompetent for trial.
