CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- A state-sponsored employer of blind and low-vision people says it has laid off 13 workers in Cumberland.

The Cumberland Times-News ( ) reported in its Friday edition that Blind Industries and Services of Maryland says it expects the reduction to be temporary.

President Frederick Puente says the layoffs reflect a drop in orders from a government customer that is switching to a new uniform. He says he expects orders and employment to increase after the transition.

The Blind Industries website says its customers include the U.S. Defense Department and Federal Prison Industries.

Blind Industries currently employs 60 people in Cumberland.

Its website says the Baltimore-based not-for-profit corporation employs 500 workers at eleven facilities in Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Kentucky and North Carolina.
