Container traffic up at Hampton Roads port

Thursday - 2/27/2014, 4:10am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The port of Hampton Roads started the new year with an increase in container traffic.

The Virginia Port Authority says the port moved more than 167,000 containers in January. That's a 5.4 percent increase from the same month a year ago.

Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart says growth was expected in 2014, and volume in the first month exceeded the forecast.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1kiuNRz ) reports that 54 percent of last month's container traffic was outbound. Export traffic increased by 7 percent, imports by 3.5 percent.
