Metro given money to fund more eight car trains

WASHINGTON — In a regional meeting, the District’s mayor and the governors from Virginia and Maryland committed $75 million in additional funding for Metro.

Metro General Manager Richard Sarles said the money will help Metro move towards operating more eight car trains.

Sarles also says that the first two lines likely to receive the additional cars would be the Orange and Red lines because they are the most crowded.

Sarles says the money is just a fraction of the $3 billion needed to upgrade the system, but calls the regional agreement a big step forward.

The meeting between Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray was held in Arlington to discuss public safety and environmental issues. It was the first time the three Democrats had met since McAuliffe took office.
