Defense: Va. mall shooting suspect competent

Wednesday - 2/26/2014, 1:44pm  ET

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A defense lawyer says his client is competent to stand trial on charges of shooting two women at a community college inside a Christiansburg mall.

Media outlets report that lawyer Jimmy Turk told Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Marc Long on Wednesday that a psychological evaluation shows 19-year-old Neil MacInnis is competent.

But Turk says the court-approved psychologist has requested more time before making a sanity determination. He told Long that the psychologist wants to review records related to a suicide attempt.

Long scheduled another hearing for April 16.

MacInnis faces aggravated malicious wounding and firearms charges.

The shooting occurred on April 12, 2013, at a satellite campus of New River Community College inside the mall.
