FLOYD, Va. (AP) -- Floyd County High School guard Caleb Tanner has set a career scoring record.
Tanner's layup in the first quarter of an 81-62 victory over Giles on Thursday night broke the Virginia High School League record of 2,687 points set in 1997 by Stacy Ervin of Twin Springs. The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/1flLECm ) the 6-1 senior scored 36 points in the game, boosting his career total to 2,713.
Tanner said after the game that he was just glad to win the conference tournament semifinal and advance to the championship game.
Ervin, who went on to pay for Western Carolina and Virginia-Wise, drove up from Kingsport, Tenn., to watch Tanner break his record. Tanner called that "very classy."
