Va AG: Ruling on same-sex marriage a step forward

Friday - 2/14/2014, 4:04pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Attorney General Mark Herring says a federal judge's ruling overturning the state's ban on same-sex marriage is another step forward ensuring all Virginians are treated fairly and equally under the law.

Herring held a news conference on Friday to discuss the decision handed down by U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen in Norfolk.

Wright Allen's late-night ruling Thursday declared Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, writing that it violates the 14th Amendment.

Wright Allen stayed her decision, which means no marriages can take place until the issue is ultimately resolved.

Herring said Virginians deserve to be treated exactly the same regardless of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.

Last month, Herring announced that he'd join the fight against the ban after his office conducted a thorough legal review.
