WASHINGTON - Women in the D.C. area come closer than their peers in other cities to earning as much men, but they still lag behind male workers.

Forbes.com turned to financial literacy site NerdWallet to learn that women in D.C., Arlington and Alexandria earn 80 percent of what men earn. Women's median salary was $55,500.

Women's earnings came closest to matching men's wages in the San Francisco area, where a woman earns 84 cents for every dollar a man earns. The median salary among women is $54,600 there.

The highest median salary among women was $56,000 in San Jose, Calif. But that's only 74 cents for each dollar a man earns, according to Forbes, which worked with Nerd Wallet to crunch U.S. Census figures.

Baltimore ranked 10th on the list of best-paying cities for women. The median salary is $46,800, which is 79 percent of what men earn.
