2 rescued after car goes into Chickahominy River

Tuesday - 2/4/2014, 12:30pm  ET

HENRICO, Va. (AP) -- Police say a car that plunged into the Chickahominy River in Henrico County was fleeing police when the accident occurred.

Henrico police tell media outlets that rescuers pulled two female passengers out of the river following Monday night's accident. The male driver was found later about a mile away from the site.

Both women are in critical condition at VCU Medical Center. The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Police say an officer tried to stop the vehicle at 9:57 p.m. Monday because it was being driven erratically. The car fled at a high rate of speed and officers couldn't catch up to it.

About half an hour later, the Henrico Division of Fire responded to a reported vehicle accident and found the car overturned in the river.
