NORFOLK, Va. - A Navy destroyer has left Virginia on its way to its new home port in Spain.
The USS Donald Cook is the first of four destroyers the Navy is moving to Rota, Spain, as part of a NATO plan to provide ballistic missile defense for Europe. Each ship is equipped with the sophisticated Aegis radar system, enabling them to track and shoot down ballistic missiles.
The guided- missile destroyer left Naval Station Norfolk on Friday.
The Navy says eliminating the transit time from the East Coast to Europe will allow its ships to be where they're needed more often.
The last time a U.S. Navy ship was homeported in Spain was 1979.
