BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore jury is deliberating for a third day in the first federal trial stemming from the severe beating of a state prison inmate in 2008.

The jury was set to reconvene Friday. Jurors have deliberated more than nine hours since Wednesday.

Correctional Sgt. Josh Hummer is accused of failing to stop five other officers from beating Kenneth Davis after the inmate allegedly punched a guard at the Roxbury Correctional Institution near Hagerstown

Hummer says he didn't see the beating that left Davis with a broken nose, back and ribs.

Prosecutors say Hummer also failed to get medical help for Davis and conspired to cover up the beating.

Hummer is one of 15 officers indicted. Twelve have pleaded guilty.

Davis recovered and was released in 2012.
