SALEM, Va. (AP) -- A medical examiner says a Western Virginia Regional Jail inmate died of natural causes.
The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/1f8jIRj) reports 61-year-old Marie Joy Atkinson of Christiansburg died last Friday, nine days after she was charged with striking an assistant prosecutor in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
Atkinson had accompanied her son to his Jan. 15 trial for reckless driving, was found in contempt and ordered to serve 10 days in jail.
Jail Superintendent Bobby Russell says Atkinson became ill Jan. 22, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and returned to jail Friday. She became ill again that day. A jail news release says she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The release says an autopsy by the Roanoke medical examiner determined the preliminary cause of death was from natural causes.
