Md. House of Correction in Jessup being destroyed

Friday - 1/17/2014, 8:48am  ET

JESSUP, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland prison built in the 19th century is being demolished.

A crane will start dismantling the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup starting Friday. The facility, also known as "The Cut" or "The House," opened around 1879. It was closed in 2007 after an especially violent year in which two correctional officers were stabbed, one fatally.

Inmates have for more than a year helped deconstruct the facility, piece by piece. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has been recycling reusable materials from the prison.
