Warming shelters are opening throughout the region

WASHINGTON – The cold that’s coming to the region Monday night and Tuesday isn’t just uncomfortable; it’s downright dangerous for anyone who doesn’t have a warm place to go. Some localities are offering warming center where people can come in from the cold.

District of Columbia

The Department of Human Services says that anyone who needs to can come to any public building in D.C., including public recreation centers and libraries. You can see a list of locations for rec centers here and libraries here.

The department also asks anyone who sees or knows of someone who is homeless or without power to call the hypothermia helpline at 1-800-535-7252, or the mayor’s call center at 311.

Fairfax County

The Department of Public Affairs advises people who need warmth to head to warming centers at libraries (locations here) and community centers (locations here, or to the Fairfax County Government Center, on Government Center Parkway, off Monument Drive in Fairfax. It’s accessible by the 605, 621, 622 and 623 bus lines.

If you see someone at night who is unsheltered and you think could be at risk of hypothermia, call the county’s non-emergency phone line at 703-691-2131, TTY 711.

Arlington County

The emergency winter shelter, normally only open from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m., will be open all day.

Alexandria

The city’s recreation centers are open as warming centers. The hours given are the centers’ regular Monday-Wednesday hours:

  • The Charles Barrett center, at 1115 Martha Custis Drive, is open 2-6 p.m.
  • The Charles Houston center, at 901 Wythe St., is open 9-9.
  • The Cora Kelly center, at 25 West Reed Ave., is open 9-9.
  • The Durant Arts Center, at 1605 Cameron St., is open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • The Lee Center, at 1108 Jefferson St., is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • The Mount Vernon center, at 2701 Commonwealth Ave., is open 9-9.
  • The Patrick Henry center, at 4643 Taney Ave., is open 2:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • The William Ramsay center, at 5650 Sanger Ave., is open 9-9.

Montgomery County

All homeless shelters in the county, which usually close during the day, are open around the clock. All county facilities, such as libraries

and rec centers are also available as warming centers during the day.

County officials urge anyone in need to call the crisis center at 240-777-4000.

Prince George’s County

Regular warming-center locations and their hours for Monday through Wednesday:

  • Harmony Hall Regional Center, 10701 Livingston Rd., Fort Washington

    Call 301-203-6040 for hours

  • Suitland Community Park School Center, 5600 Regency Lane, Forestville

    Open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Bowie Community Center, 3209 Stonybrook Drive, Bowie

    Open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday

  • Seat Pleasant Activity Center, 5720 Addison Rd., Seat Pleasant

    Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Kentland Community Center Park, 2411 Pinebrook Ave., Landover

    Open 12 noon to 8:30 p.m.

  • Deerfield Run Community Center, 13000 Laurel-Bowie Rd., Laurel

    Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Calvert County

The county on Monday announced the opening of an emergency overnight warming center at Project ECHO, at 484 Main Street in Prince Frederick.

If you need a warm place to spend a bit of time, the county recommends the community centers. Their locations and hours:

  • The Northeast Community Center, at 4075 Gordon Stinnett Avenue in Chesapeake Beach, is open Sunday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday- Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The Mount Hope Community Center, at 100 Pushaw Station Road in Sunderland, is open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
  • The Southern Community Center, at 20 Appeal Lane in Lusby, is open Monday- Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • The Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center, at 130 Auto Drive in Prince Frederick, is open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The county government also wants people to know about the Safe Nights program, run by the Calvert Interfaith Council. It’s an overnight program for anyone who has no place to stay, but you need to prove you live in Calvert County and register by calling 443-486-8670 or e-mailing calvertsafenights@gmail.com.

Prince William County

The Drop-in Center and Cold Night Shelter in Dale City will be open through 1 p.m. Wednesday. The hours may be extended, the county government says.

The Department of Social Services and Manassas City Family Services are also working with churches in the Manassas area to try to open a shelter in that area.

Stafford, Loudoun Counties

Officials also are advising people to go to public buildings such as libraries. In Stafford County, the England Run library is at 806 Lyons Blvd., Fredericksburg; the John Musante Porter Branch is at 2001 Parkway Boulevard in Stafford. Both are open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday nights and until 5:30 Fridays through Sundays.

There are eight libraries in Loudoun County; their locations can be found here. They’re all open until 9 p.m. through Thursday night.

Charles County

Warming centers in the county are open Monday through Wednesday:

  • Capital Clubhouse, 3033 Waldorf Market Place, Waldorf

    Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Can accommodate 100 people)

  • Department of Community Services, 8190 Port Tobacco Rd., Port Tobacco

    Open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (100 people)

  • Port Tobacco Community Center, 8190 Port Tobacco Rd., Port Tobacco

    Open 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (100 people)

  • Nanjemoy Community Center, 4375 Port Tobacco Rd., Nanjemoy

    Open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (60 people)

  • Richard R. Clark Senior Center, 1210 Charles St., La Plata

    Open 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (25 people)

People can also take shelter at all library branches:

  • La Plata Branch, 2 Garrett Ave., La Plata (100 people)
  • P.D. Brown Memorial Branch, 50 Village St., Waldorf (50 people)
  • Potomac Branch, 3225 Ruth B. Swan Drive, Indian Head (100 people)
  • Waldorf West, 10405 O’Donnell Place, Waldorf(350 people)

All branches are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Anne Arundel County

Warming centers will open in all police district community rooms starting Monday at 6 p.m. and continuing around the clock until noon on Wednesday.

The locations:

  • Northern District – 939 Hammonds Lane, Baltimore
  • Eastern District – 3700 Mountain Rd., Pasadena
  • Western District – 8273 Telegraph Rd., Odenton
  • Southern District – 35 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater

For Tuesday, the Department of Aging will open all senior centers as warming centers beginning at 8 a.m.

County libraries will also serve as warming centers. The Annapolis Area Library, Crofton Branch, North County Area Library, Severna Park Branch and West County Area Library will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the Broadneck Branch, Brooklyn Park Branch, Eastport-Annapolis Neck Branch, Edgewater Branch, Linthicum Branch, Maryland City at Russett Branch, Mountain Road Branch, Provinces Branch, Riviera Beach Branch and South County Branch are open 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The county also says that beds are available for the homeless at:

  • Arundel Christian Church, 710 Aquahart Rd., Glen Burnie;
  • John Wesley United Methodist Church, 6922 Ritchie Hwy., Glen Burnie;
  • Bay Ridge Christian Church, 1071 Bay Ridge Rd., Annapolis;
  • Lighthouse Shelter, 10 Hudson St., Annapolis

St. Mary’s County

The following places are open as warming centers:

  • Garvey Senior Activity Center, 41780 Baldridge St., Leonardtown

    Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Loffler Senior Activity Center, 21905 Chancellor’s Run Rd., Great Mills

    Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Northern Senior Activity Center, 29655 Charlotte Hall Rd., Charlotte Hall

    Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Charlotte Hall Library, 37600 New Market Rd., Charlotte Hall

    Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Leonardtown Library, 23250 Hollywood Rd., Leonardtown

    Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Lexington Park Library, 21677 FDR Blvd., Lexington Park

    Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
