BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- A 71-year-old U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has collapsed and died while on duty in South Texas.
A memorial service will be held Thursday night in Brownsville for Officer Darrell Windhaus.
Cameron County Justice of the Peace Benito Ochoa says Windhaus apparently had a heart attack Sunday after boarding a cargo ship at the Port of Brownsville. Windhaus was an inspector. He died at the scene.
Windhaus served in the Army and was with the former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service before becoming a CBP officer, overall serving his country for more than 40 years.
Agency officials say Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh (jay) Johnson and CBP Acting Commissioner Thomas Winkowski planned to attend the memorial service.
