WASHINGTON – The winter solstice on Dec. 21 is the start of what usually will be the coldest months ahead but not this year when the Washington area experienced record high temperatures. WJLA reports records were broken at all three local major airports on Saturday.
- Reagan National Airport reached 72 degrees.
- BWI-Marshall Airport hit 71 degrees.
- Dulles Airport reported 70 degrees.
Saturday temperatures beat the old record of 68 degrees set back in 1923, according to The Washington Post.
Saturday into Sunday will continue to stay mild with a limited chance for scattered showers. Temperatures will slowly fall to the middle 50s and lower 60s overnight. But temperatures will begin to drop to a more average range for this time of year when colder air is expected to rush in on Monday. Christmas Eve on Tuesday will be dry with highs in the lower 40s. Christmas Day is expected to be even colder with highs in the upper 30s.
