Public safety funding proposed in Va

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Gov. Bob McDonnell is proposing more than $55 million in state funding in the next two-year budget cycle for public safety.

The governor announced the proposals on Friday.

The budget proposals including money for sheriffs, commonwealth's attorneys and circuit court clerk deputies to fund new hires and for pay increases.

The governor's proposal also includes funding to reduce overcrowding in jails, assist localities with qualified law enforcement departments and support other critical operations.
