Md. lawmaker postpones minimum wage event

Thursday - 12/12/2013, 12:33pm  ET

FORESTVILLE, Md. -- A state lawmaker from Prince George's County is postponing an event to highlight the difficulty of shopping for food as a minimum-wage earner.

Democratic Del. Aisha Braveboy planned to shop for groceries Thursday morning alongside a low-wage worker, but the event has been postponed.

Maryland's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, the same as the federal minimum. Braveboy is backing a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour by 2016.

The Montgomery and Prince George's county councils and the D.C. Council recently voted to raise the minimum wage in those jurisdictions to $11.50 an hour. The votes follow a national trend in which states and localities are addressing wages in the wake of federal inaction.
