Md. drivers advised to stay off roads

Sunday - 12/8/2013, 5:30pm  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland highway crews have made some progress on the state's snow-covered roads, but drivers are still being advised to stay home if possible.

State Highway Administrator Melinda Peters says many roads had been plowed down to bare pavement as of late Sunday afternoon. But she says icy conditions are likely and drivers shouldn't get overly confident. She notes that ice is harder to see and harder to remove from pavement than snow.

Earlier Sunday, the fast-moving storm dumped several inches of snow on parts of Maryland. State Highway Administration spokeswoman Lora Rakowski says there were numerous accidents, including crashes that closed both eastbound and westbound Interstate 68 in western Maryland.
